Short Story

The Challenge

Living on Tioman, Nurul and Pulau Tioman villagers face a big problem: fresh produce costs 2-3 times more than on the mainland due to transportation costs. This makes it hard for many families to afford healthy food.

Our Solution

Nurul want to build a hydroponic farm right here on Tioman! This will allow Nurul to:

  • Grow fresh vegetables locally
  • Offer affordable produce to our community
  • Create a sustainable source of income for Nurul family

Nurul’s Story:

Meet Nurul Hafizzah binti Awang Jamaat, a 37-year-old native of Kampung Tekek on the beautiful Pulau Tioman. As a mother of four, Nurul balances her roles as a cook’s assistant at SMK Seri Mersing and a volunteer with the Malaysian Armed Forces. Despite her busy life, Nurul’s true passion lies in agriculture and serving her community.

“I was originally interested in agriculture, and now I am venturing into this field by joining the Sayur Kita Asia program because I want to learn more and increase my family’s income,” Nurul shares. “It looks easy, but the fact is, we need to learn so much more.” Through hands-on learning and guidance in the program, Nurul gained valuable skills and knowledge about sustainable farming practices and hydroponic farming skills and now she wants to make her passion into reality.

A Vision for Tioman:

Living on an island, Nurul has witnessed firsthand the challenges of accessing affordable fresh produce. “fresh produce costs 2-3 times more than on the mainland due to transportation cost,” she explains. This reality sparked an idea in Nurul – to create a hydroponic farm right on Tioman Island.

“If I manage to build my own farm, I am happy to say, at least the people of my village can buy local produce at a cheaper price in that area,”

Challenges and Determination:

Nurul’s path is not without obstacles. She admits, “I lack the capital to kickstart my hydroponic farm.”

To make this dream a reality, Nurul is seeking RM3000 to fund two rows of Hydroponic farm:

  1. Hydroponic equipment and supplies
  2. Seeds and growing materials
  3. initial operating costs
  4. Set up water filtration systems
