Regenerative Farmers Malaysia
Kuala Kangsar, Perak | Pasture-Raised Poultry | myGAP Certified
Malaysia’s first regenerative agriculture demonstration farm — building soil, training farmers, producing nutrient-dense food.
Founded by Michael – From Engineer to Regenerative Farmer
Michael Ong didn’t plan to become a farmer.
Trained as an engineer, he spent his childhood reluctantly helping on his family’s farm in Perak. Years later, he watched his father develop severe skin disease from long-term pesticide exposure on their durian plantation.
That experience planted a question he couldn’t shake: Why does farming have to poison the people who do it?
In 2023, at age 50, Michael started Regenerative Farmers Malaysia with six chickens and RM 300. Eighteen months later, RFM operates 1,000 birds across 7 acres of owned land in Kuala Kangsar — a working proof-of-concept that profitable farming and land regeneration aren’t opposites.
His message: “Real sustainability means independence — from chemical inputs, from degraded soil, from a food system that makes farmers sick.”
How the Farm Operates
RFM is a pasture-raised poultry operation using rotational grazing under coconut canopy.
The System
Mobile chicken tractors move every 1–2 days across fresh pasture. The chickens:
- Forage for insects and fresh greens (reducing feed costs)
- Fertilise soil naturally through distributed manure
- Aerate ground through scratching behaviour
- Break pest cycles without chemicals
This rotation prevents the bare ground, ammonia buildup, and soil degradation typical of fixed-coop systems. Instead:
- Manure processes naturally into the soil
- Microorganism populations thrive
- Grass regenerates faster
- Water infiltration improves
- Land becomes more resilient each season
The Results
Nutrient Density Testing (Certificate of Analysis data):
- RFM eggs contain 6–8× higher omega-3 than conventional eggs
- Produced without antibiotics, hormones, or synthetic inputs
Integrated Crops
The 7-acre property includes coconut, durian, mangosteen, jackfruit, guava, and pineapple — all benefiting from the natural nutrient cycling created by livestock rotation. Most trees require minimal additional fertilisation.

The Bigger Picture: Food Sovereignty for Malaysia
RFM isn’t just a farm — it’s a demonstration of what Malaysian agriculture could become.
Malaysia imports over 60% of its food. Climate disruption, supply chain shocks, and rising input costs make this dependency increasingly risky. Regenerative agriculture offers a path toward:
- Reduced import dependency through local, resilient food production
- Healthier soil that holds water, sequesters carbon, and produces nutrient-dense food
- Farmer livelihoods that don’t require poisoning yourself to make a living
Through PPRM, Michael is working to scale this model — training farmers, establishing standards, and building the infrastructure for a regenerative agriculture movement in Malaysia.
When you visit or partner with RFM, you’re supporting that vision.
